Crafters With Purpose
Created By: Dawna Penrod
During the fall of 2006 FUMC of Natchitoches, La began a crafts group during Wednesday night activities. One member of the group was taking chemo for ovarian cancer. She saw the need for a way to express our thoughts and prayers to persons taking chemo. Her concern was the seed that started our prayer shawl ministry. Crocheting, knitting and tatting were the skills various ladies in the group used in crafting. In Oct. 2006 our first prayer shawl was given to a chemo patient.
Fall 2007 the group organized and focused on their mission and began using the name Crafters With Purpose. A crafter defined as one who uses skill to make by hand. Purpose defined as having a goal or aim to strive toward. As Crafters With Purpose we are using our variety of skills with the goal of sharing God's love, particularly with people who are ill or going through difficult circumstances.
We meet each Wednesday night during a church wide activities time called TAMBO(that all may be one).
We pause for prayer and a craft devotion written by a member of the group. Then we fellowship as we work and teach others who want to learn our crafts. Prayer shawls are prayed over by the person making it and also by the church's Tuesday evening intercessory prayer group. Sometimes when the shawl is made for a person envolved in a special group(ex.Sunday School Class)the shawl is also brought to members of that group to pray over it for the recipient. Recently loom knitting was added to the group. Thus, making hats for chemo patients is also a part of the group.By February 2008 this small group of 6--8 women has given out 60 prayer shawls either knitted, crocheted or fleece with tatted lace edgings to chemo patients or persons with difficult illnesses or situations. Seasonal gifts for shut-ins. nursing home patients and ill persons are also made and given out.
My prayer while writing this is that others will feel the need to start a similar program in their church or area.
