The ministry at out church (Trinity UMC in Duncanville, TX) started when I saw The Prayer Shawl Ministry book in one of my craft catalogs. It sounded interesting so I ordered it.
After receiving it, I thought this was something that could happen at our church. With God's guidance, the idea was publicized in our church paper and in the local Dallas and Duncanville, TX area papers.
We received quite a response and began gathering twice a month (2nd and 4th Saturday) for 1-1/2 hours to create these shawls. We began this ministry in the summer of 2006 and are still going strong.
Those who crochet and knit with us are people from our church, people from other churches in the area and one lady who crochets from her home using the patterns.
It has been a wonderful God-blessed ministry. We have given out a lot of shawls to people in pain, who are going into surgery, for new births and have sent shawls to many states in the U.S. as well as three shawls to Germany.
The best part of this ministry is receiving word back from those who have been on the receiving end. Their words of thanks are appreciated, but more importantly is the comfort they have received from their shawls which is very touching and affirms that this is a God-sent ministry to our church that touches a lot of lives.
