Covered in Love from Head to Toe
Created By: Carol Tomerlin

A few years ago, our 8 year old grandson had to be admitted to Children's Hospital in Washington, DC for tests and treatment. When we went to visit him, I noticed lots of young patients sitting in the traditional thin hospital gowns. Several looked worried, cold or miserable. Some little ones were bald from chemo. I felt so bad for them.

About a year later, a sudden thought was planted in my heart, and I truly believe this was from God. "Make lap blankets for the kids at Children's." So I called the hospital, thinking I'd get a dismissive answer; instead they were overjoyed that I wanted to help them in this way. Immediately I began shopping for yarns, and found Lion Brand to have many wonderful choices in colors and textures. With my yarn stash in hand, crocheting began in earnest, with me usually spending about 10 hours a week on this.

When I mentioned it to my sister in New York, she said, "Oh, I'd love to do this with you," and she came up with the name "Covered in Love." Another friend from my Guiding Eyes for the Blind group in Texas joined us not long after. They mail me their creations, and I drive them into the city to deliver them.

Since then, we have branched out from blankets to shawls, chemo caps, newborn and preemie hats, socks and booties. Although we usually do not hear back from individual patients or families due to the stress they are already going through, we did get one sweet note a year ago from a lady whose 6 month old son had tubes put in his ears. She said it was so cold in the operating room, and they wrapped him in blue and white shell stitch blanket I'd made. This had comforted him and them.

My sister and I pray for the children and their families as we make these items to cover them in love from head to toe. We also individually package them and stamp them with our logo. It makes it seem a more personal gift to them somehow. This ministry is an excellent way to encuorage those who are hurting, and if you are considering it, ask God to show you who you can touch with your ministry. He'll show you. I know it!
