Prayer Shawl story
Created By: Nancy Ecarius

Prayer Shawl Ministry of OLD TOWN CHRISTIAN OUTREACH CENTER, SAGINAW MICHIGAN 48602 was introduced to the congregation on October 7, 2007

I, Nancy Ecarius, introduced the proposal to the people at all the Sunday church times. I had a sign up sheet in the back, along with a poster board display about the Prayer Shawl Ministry.

Eighteen (18) people originally signed up.

In the church bulletin we requested the donations of coupons for JoAnn's Fabric stores, and also the donation of yarn.

We have donated Prayer Shawls to:

those suffering the loss of a loved one

those suffering from illness

those in hospitals, nursing homes, homebound.

those celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, etc

EACH donation of a shawl comes with a 9 page typed "booklet" of the prayers that we used during the construction, and completion of the shawl. Also, the Bible verses we included, and many words of inspiration and hope. It also starts out with an explanation of what the Prayer Shawl Ministry is.

At our first meeting, 11/25/07 I passed out the donated yarns we received. Also, many of the 18 women brought in completed "shawls" to the cause.

All together at that meeting I collected 18 shawls.

Our 2nd meeting was 2/2/08, and again 18 new shawls were donated.

I started a scrapbook, keeping all the church information, and all the shawls we gathered, all the meetings, and pictures of the shawls we gave away, along with a discription of where/who it was going to.

We continue to pray for those that have received the shawls.

We plan on having monthly meetings in the future. We also are planning a "picnic in the park", a bring a dish to pass outing for the summer months.

At our last meeting, we had members of our churches' Soup Kitchen, and the Youth Ministry attend, and they all got involved in tying knots on a quilt we were finishing. We even had a few men involved!

We mainly crochet & knit, but we have a few quilters, and some do sewing/embroidery work.

We ask the audience, "Can you tie your shoes?"....and if the response is "Yes", then we tell them, they can tie a knot on a quilt, and they too can be a part of the Prayer Shawl Ministry.

It is so spiritually satisfying to be a part of something we know and love, working with our hands, including our prayers, and being a part of a ministry that spreads the Gospel of our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ.
