We Were Blessed

We do not belong to a ministry, but my family was the recipient of three prayer shawls - my mother's was made from Lion Brand Homespun Baroque - and it was such a comfort to my mother. My 19-year-old nephew had passed away unexpectedly, and the prayer shawl ministry of St. Andrew's Newman Center in Riverside, California, gave a shawl to his mother and his two grandmothers. Each shawl was different, but had a prayer attached, a remembrance poem, the name of the maker and the date it was made, as well as crosses sewn into the shawl and beads spelling out "hope" and "joy." At a time of unspeakable pain from the loss of a child, these shawls brought a bit of softness and warmth and security to my family and were a source of comfort at just the right time.
