I crocheted my mother a prayer shawl as a surprise for her upcoming 73rd birthday. Wanting to make it extra special, I gave some of her close friends and relatives a pearl bead and told them to hold it in their hands while praying for her. I also gave them a small sheet of paper and asked them to write a short note of encouragement to her. After crocheting and fringing the shawl, I sewed the beads at intervals along the edge of both ends of the prayer shawl. She can read the thoughts of those that love her as she feels the love and prayers lifted up in her behalf while wearing the shawl wrapped around her shoulders.
