Fortunate Crocheter
Created By: Milta Ayala

I learned to crochet over 35 years ago while I was attending the 7th grade in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, where I was born and raised. I've crocheted many precious items for family members and friends. Five years ago, my step-son found him self in prison and I was on my way with my husband to visit with him for the first time. It was a 14 hour round trip and I made sure I was stocked with enough yarns to keep myself busy. When I got back home I found myself with 50 pairs of baby booties. I called one of the health clinics in the area and asked for the volunteer department. They connected me to the Volunteer Coordinator, Barbar Purr, who was ecstatic with the fact that I wanted to donate my booties. Ever since, every year come October, I've been donating my crocheted baby items. Last year I donated 27 crocheted baby sweaters, along with 15 sets of baby blankets, booties and hats. This year, I donated 10 baby girl blanket sets and 10 baby boy blankets, along with 50 pairs of booties. Every year I am more and more excited of donating to the needy. Some of these moms don't even have a decent towel to take these babies home. I feel fortunate knowing that with my crocheting,I can warm many babies to come.
