Our Day Out
Created By: Kathy Johndrow

My sister-in-law (and dear friend) and I are both single parents of teenagers and rarely have a chance to get away. We both knit and crochet, and because of this, a mutual friend told us about a Fiber Fest in Allegan, MI. We had decided we would go and make it an adventure day for us. From the moment we walked onto the fair grounds, we felt this calming excitement. I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s the only way I can describe it. It wasn’t like other festival where everyone is rushing here and their and missing half of everything in their rush. The atmosphere had a calming effect on us even thought we were excited to have a rare day off and finding new treasures for our yarn baskets to boot. We walked around talking to everyone, learning new techniques for old crafts, learning new crafts and adding to our stashes in the meantime. After several hours, we were worn out and out of money but relaxed. We were smiling from ear to ear. At that moment, Robin said “It just hit me why this festival is so different. Everyone here is smiling and happy! They are here to enjoy a kinship with others that share the enjoyment of our craft!” At that point, with my never ending wit (haha) I stated “And we were able to talk about yarn, wool, knitting needles, crochet hooks, stitches, patterns, etc. without one word about how “old” were are and why would anyone want to just sit around with a ball of yarn and some sticks!” There and then we decided this was going to be an annual trip for us because it did more to relax us then going to a spa!
