Connected
Created By: Dorothy Rice
I learned to knit after having crocheted for years. This story starts with a group of ladies in our church family who started a mnission. To use our hands and hearts and talents to help other people. We have become connected to a mission in Africa, "Made in the Streets." This mission serves young mothers who live, literally, in the streets.
I was charged with making little hats, or toboggans as we know them for little guys in this mission deep in Kenya. I knitted or crocheted 30 of them and they were taken to Africa by a team of mission minded people from our church. Later, I attended a fundraiser dinner at our church for this mission. Over $40,000 was raised to further the work of the mission. The table was decorated with colors and themes of Africa.
On each table were pictures of babies and older children in the mission. On one of the tables, there was a picture of a little baby, dark eyes smiling in a dark face. Light shone from those healthy looking eyes. Snuggled atop his little head was one of the caps I had made. I feel connected to a single mother in the middle of the African Continent, whom I'm sure I will never meet, personally, but I feel connected.
