Knitting and solitude
Created By: Nancy Niles
Knitting is a family tradition for me. My mother taught me to knit and her father taught her. When he was a young man he worked fishing and knitted his fishing nets. My mother has knitted afghans in the past. I think I was 10 when she taught me. My first project was a scarf of course. I have knitted sweaters, scarves, mittens and afghans over the years. I enjoy knitting so much. I work in the medical field. I knit to relieve stress. It is my solitude. I can knit anytime anywhere under any condition. I knit on trips. I knitted in the hospital when family members have been there. Knitting keeps me connected. I think the most rewarding this is when I can help someone start to knit or help a total stranger with advice on a project. Knitting brings people together much like the stitches of a knitting project together make an object. I pray that I never lose the use of my hands as I would not be the same person if I could not knit.
