My Gran
Created By: Jennifer Sarah Best
My Gran was the most wonderful person in the whole world. When my mother left she became mother to my brother and I and filled that enormous gaping hole with unbounded love, gentle discipline and happiness. Gran had the kind of common sense and attitude to life which developed in war torn Britain. She taught me not to waste, to live each day as they come but to be mindful of the future. Most important she taught me patience with others. Most of this she taught me without making it obvious, by teaching me knitting, sewing, embroidering and crochet. None of the things I produced were very good but she praised everything I did. And repeatedly, with good humour, explained things again and again. She imparted the idea that I could have pride in what I did, and therefore in myself. I knit, sew, crochet, make clothes, create Dorset buttons, bake and cook, and I keep her alive inside of me with each thing I create. I will pass this on to my son when he is ready, who someday will be able to pass these skills on to his children. And those subtle but oh so important lessons my Gran gave me, which shaped me and made me who I am, will be passed along too.
