Time with Grandma
Created By: Alani Kerr
My grandmother taught me to knit/crochet when I was about 10 years old. As long as I can remember my grandmother was creating...afghans,sweaters,socks,cookies,preserves...you get the idea. I think she got tired of always hearing "whatcha doing Grandma?" and finally taught me how to craft to shut me up! Over the years her patience, skill and always love helped me create many beautiful and useful gifts. It also helped me to get to spend many hours getting to know this wonderful woman as a woman, not just "grandma". The year she passed away, we found boxes of yarn, needles, unfinished projects, etc.,some we kept to be finished by others in our family and others we gave away to the seniors home in our town. I kept the last afghan she ever made and it has a place of honor in my home. Now I work with seniors, many of whom are crafters and I find that being one myself gives me common ground with them and helps me to make them more comfortable in their new surroundings...after all who can be more happy than a crafter teaching someone else what they know! I will always be grateful that my grandma took the time to teach me, listen to me, spend time with me. I wish I still had her experience to rely on, for the help, but also for the companionship. I miss my grandma, but I miss my friend more.
