Never too young..........
Created By: Kathleen Gibbs
I remember vividly the day that I first picked up a pair of knitting needles and a ball of wall. Really they were thrust into my hands by my mother who had lovingly nursed me through a really serious bout of measles.
I was aged five and had been really poorly, having a high temperature for days and also having to have the bedroom curtains closed all the time to protect my eyes.
As I bagan to feel better my Mum gave me a pair of child's knitting needles and I think it was some red wool. She sat with me for hours teaching me how to knit. My patience certainly got the best of me but my Mum remained calm and continued teaching me.
When my Dad got home that night from work I proudly showed him what I had created.
He was always one to 'tell it as it was.'
"Why on earth have you knitted a fish!"
This remark could have scarred me for life as a poorly five year old. But thankfully it made me all the more determined to continue getting 'a straight edge' to my projects.
I am know 46 years old and I am lost whenever I haven't got my needles and wool with me. I have knitted for my own two children, neices and nephews, friends children and for local hospitals. I am now proudly knitting for my niece's expected baby due in December. I have used the excuse of taking her the items personally as she lives in France, so the delivery will include four days rest and relaxation - along with my knitting needles and wool of course.
A word of encouragement to all new knitters - you are never to young or too old to take up this wonderful and satisfying art form. Go for it!!!!!
