Up In Smoke
Created By: Joan Johnson
Picture it - a 19-year old mom of two boys teaching herself to crochet and advancing from scarves to hats and mittens. Attempting ever-more difficult projects. "For experienced only" was just a challenge to prove I could make a sewater, or a lacy doily, and even a bedspread.
Picture it - a 22-year-old single mom of three boys. Needed to find a job and keep our lives together. Didn't leave much time for a hobby.
Some forty plus years later, the little boys were grown with families of their own. I had retired, but not before getting involved with acting in regional theater. I was asked to contribute an item for a raffle to raise money for new stage lighting, so I crocheted an afghan.
Skip ahead a year to when I learned I needed to have open-heart surgery. I decided it wouold be a good idea to quit smoking before going into the hospital, and to keep my hands busy, I once again took up the hook. It kept my hands busy so that I didn't miss those cigarettes - well, not as much.
The surgery went well. I'm still a non-smoker. I'm still involved in theater. In rehearsal for THE FULL MONTY just now. (No, I don't have to take my clothes off!!) And I'm still crocheting. Waiting to go on stage gives me time to complete a row or two. I'm currently on my twenty-seventh Fisherman crochet afghan in the two and a half years since my surgery. Smoking is but a distant memory, and family, friends and the theater have all benefitted from the renewal of my old hobby. The yarn store loves to see me coming, but they do miss me at the tobacco shop!
