What I Discovered My Daughter Noticed
Created By: Sheila Sherman
It seems like I have knit for a long time. I started young, knit through 4-H, and knit as my kids grew up. When they entered high school, I always put it down when we went to their ball games. I debated about taking it for a long time, I never saw anyone else knitting, just focused on the game. I have always traveled with my knitting; I just never took it into the game. One night I took it in. I got many questions, looks, and comments. I finished many projects, scarves, Easter chickens, Christmas bells, mostly easy patterns. I finally settled on knit dishcloths. I knit a lot of them. When a little girl would stare at me, curious, I would give her the needles and let her do a stitch or two sometimes she did a row. Sometimes I shared those stitches with several girls. If I got the dishcloth done, I usually gave it away. One game a mom wanted to try. I gave her the dishcloth at the next game.
I guess what surprised me though was I never thought my daughter noticed that I was knitting. When she was a senior and the basketball team was in conference finals and then districts I told her I was leaving it at home. I just was not sure if I could pay attention to both. She said, "Oh, no you are not. We got this far and you were knitting in the stands you ARE knitting tonight." She said the team hoped everything stayed the same, it had to they thought to win. I knit and we were conference and district champs. We lost eventually even with me knitting but I was glad I kept it up.
I gave each team member a Christmas bell and since the coach's wife is going to medical school and will not be able to go to the games this season I gave them a set of matching slippers in our school colors. I told her she still needed to show her colors when she could. She laughed and agreed.
I do not have anyone in school this year. I got a new job that allows me to ride with my husband. I have always knit on the road so not much has changed.
