My Best Friend, Sandy
Created By: SHARI LEVY
I met Sandy in college 30 years ago. We found that we had much in common including knitting and crocheting. Her mother taught her and my grandmother taught me. Over the years we got together and did the knitting and crocheting.
Every 4-6 weeks or so one would call the other and say let's get together. She would come to me or I would go to her. We would have dinner at a local diner and go back to the house (her mother's house, my mother's house before I married, my apartment after I married).
We have 3 street fairs during the year. We'd go to the street fair, go out to lunch, and come back and do the needlework.
Right after 9/11/2001 we got involved with Project Linus.
I joined a knitting group where I live and invited her along. We meet at a local bookstore and meet in the cafe once a week at night for a couple of hours. The first year we had upwards of 6-8 people in the group. Then it started falling back. The gal who started it got a promotion and now travels for business. Someone else was semi-retired and used to come. She's now retired and travels around the world. Through it all, there was Sandy.
I wanted to do Master Knitting from the Knitting Guild of America and she was looking forward to seeing the directions.
We decided this year to take July off since I would be on vacation the first week and she was supposed to be off the last 2 weeks. We'd come back in August.
In May she had her regular doctor's appointment for an MRI. They wanted to send her to the hospital from the doctor. She asked for 24 hours so she could clear up some things at work and they said fine. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer and went in for surgery the following day. She was in surgery over 2 hours, in ICU for 2 weeks and a regular room for one week. She went to rehab after that. She was supposed to be there 4-6 weeks, at home for 2 weeks, and start chemo after that. I got a call from her mother 3 weeks into rehab (July 27) saying that she had received a call at 6:00 AM that morning. Sandy went to sleep on Thursday night and didn't wake up on Friday. We buried her on Sunday, July 29.
Sandy was my best friend and more like a sister. I sent a check to Project Linus in her memory.
I got the Masters Program and just started working on it. Well, Sandy's working on it with me and following the directions with me. I feel her still around me. I have a guardian angel looking down on me by the name of Sandy. She will always be with me.
