I guess I was about 10 years old. My mother had...
Created By: Marian Wilkins

I guess I was about 10 years old. My mother had come back from a trip to Germany, paralyzed. Her sister-in-law, my aunt had come over to help us with her daughter, my cousin. My aunt, her left-handed daughter, my younger sister and I were sitting on the backyard picnic table. My aunt took out her needles, my sister and I on either side of her and her daughter across from her. With a language barrier, German and English, my aunt taught us to knit. I was given a brown ball of yarn. Which I thought was going to be a scarf. When one day, my aunt had taken it and folded in in half and ran a needle down either side and cinched it at the top quarter to make a teddy bear. I now realize that my mother couldn't teach me as she was paralyzed on her left side and even with the language barrier, she knew enough to know that I needed her to teach me something my mother couldn't teach me. The teddy bear was cherished as the first thing I made and was loved for years to come.
