Knitting: A Metaphor for Life

In 1963 when I was a senior in high school, I and a few girls from school went to a department store to learn knitting after school. I remember how awkward the needles felt in my hands at first. But, working on that simple sweater for months, the needles finally felt comfortable in my hands. The sweater with its too tightly knitted back and its
too loosely knitted front was finally completed and pieced together. I felt great about my accomplishment. Great, until my mother, a crocheter who never felt comfortable with knitting, saw my work and said quite emphatically, "You are not going to wear that!" I knew only too well that if I did not hand it over to her she would search my things until she found it. I felt so defeated and sad that I resolved to knit when I was on my own. And I did! But, I never found out what happened to that first sweater. Why did I choose to tell this story? There is a moral here that can be applied to anything in life: do NOT give up no matter what! Not only did I learn to knit well, I also crochet well and I have been told so by very accomplished knitters and crocheters. Sadly, Mom passed away almost a dozen years ago. Gladly, I learned another moral before she passed: Forgive others for their issues. And forgive yourself for your mistakes in crafts and life! Knitting can be just about knitting but it can also be a metaphor for life. Happy knitting, everyone!
