Caps and shawls
Created By: Mary Baucher

A friend in Pennsylvania wrote how she discovered the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Her enthusiasm lit a fire under a group in our church in Modesto, California. Soon we were knitting and giving away prayer shawls which blessed not only the recipients of the shawls but we knitters as well. Before long we made contact with a friend who works with refugees in Afthanistan. She described the extreme poverty of women and children in that war-torn country where freezing temperatures compound problems for people without adequate shelter in the higher altitudes. We discovered that knitting both caps and shawls complimented each other as it was so easy to carry a little cap project to doctors' offices or to a meeting rather than a bulky shawl project. We've been fortunate to see pictures of some of the children who've received our handknit caps.

It's amazing that sometimes when a knitter completes a shawl and is not sure to whom it should be given, a name comes to mind to the group and we know it's exactly the right recipient at the right time. Again, this has been an surprising and incredible blessing.

Most of our shawls have been made with Lion Brand Homespun, using many of the wonderful, rich colors. We've experimented with some patterns in addition to the traditional Prayer Shawl Ministry three stitch seed stitch. We've use stash as well as new yarns for the colorful caps. Although I've been knitting for 65 years or so, in giving leadership to the group of 10 women I've learned so much about yarns, knitting, tricks, etc.
