The comfort in knitting
Created By: Carole Havrila
I am a registered dietitian who has worked with cancer patients for the last 11 years. For nearly 6 of those years I was blessed to know a very special patient who struggled valiantly against lymphoma. Over the many years of his treatment I learned much about him, his life, faith in God, service in Vietnam and his wife and children. I came to love them as friends. 3 years ago he lost his fight with cancer. Even though I knew he was dying, I was surprised by the loss I felt and the pain. It was at that time a nurse who worked with me, and took care of this patient, too, taught me to knit. It was so challenging, at times, to get it, but I stubbornly endured until I had the stitches down! It was a powerful way for me to use my hands to complete something tangible. Knitting was then, and still does, provide me with an enormous sense of comfort. Knitting prayer blankets/shawls and other items for people has made me feel that when I feel helpless, I can feel useful and more peaceful. I am addicted to it and will always reflect on the peace this craft has brought me.
