In Memory of my
Created By: Madeleine Poe

when I was a small child, no more than 5 or 6 years old, my grandmother, whose pet name was "Hami," taught me how to make a crochet chain. I crocheted yards of chain until she finally taught me more stitches and I was able to follow simple patterns. Hami tried to teach me how to knit but I always found the needles too clumsy in my hands, so I only made a few half-hearted and disappointing attempts through the years. I am now 55 years old and my Hami has been gone since December 31, 1999. In March of this year I was diagnosed with blood clots in my lungs, heart problems, and diabetes. What a shock! And to make things worse, I am housebound until at least September. I turned back to my favorite hobby - crocheting, and eventually I picked up an old set of knitting needles and gave that another try. My first project was a felted purse -- great for hiding mistakes! When I emailed my Mom a picture of the purse, she decided to send me all of my grandmother's knitting supplies and pattern books. (She had kept them all these years!) Imagine my surprise and delight when I received not one, but two, big boxes via UPS filled with Hami's knitting needles (more than 70 pair, not counting the double pointed and circular needles!!), accessories, and patterns dating back as far as 1957!! Improving my knitting skills has filled many hours that would have otherwise been wasted watching TV or just sleeping. Now, each time I start a new project I can just imagine my Hami smiling down on me from Heaven -- and reminding me to check my gauge and watch my tension. What a wonderful way to remember someone who was so dear to me in my life.
