Prayer Baby Blanket
Created By: Alberta Goss
What a blessing is was to learn that our prayers were answered when our daughter, Lisa, announced that she and her husband, Peter, were expecting their first baby. I wanted to do something special to celebrate and give thanks. Soon I found the perfect idea from two sources of inspiration.
While browsing through some old knitting magazines, I found an article in Family Circle Easy Knitting by Daryl Brower titles, “Blanket Statement.” It talked about having a baby shower where each guest knits a square that is assembled into a special blanketand presented to the mom-to–be with a list of all the knitters. Each square is as unique and creative as the knitter. Such a great idea, I thought.
At about the same time, I was at church when these words from Psalm 139 seemed to call out to me, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” How beautiful to remember that God knows and loves us even before we are born!
I decided to prepare a Prayer Baby Blanket Shower. I used my computer to print cute invitations along with a copy of the Psalm and sent them to all the women relatives near and far. For those who lived across country, I sent instructions, LionBrand Wool Ease yarn, and size 8 needles. Those who lived nearby came to my house for a night of reflection, laughter and knitting. Some non-knitters required knitting lessons. My cousin, Sue, taught my daughter, Lisa, as well as my eighty-five year old mother, Anita! My three grandchildren - Allie (7),Ryan (5) and Erin (4)- wanted to knit for their new cousin, too. After practicing the stitches while sitting on my lap, they each did a few rows of garter stitch and together completed one square. After all the squares were finished, I crocheted a border to make them all “fit” and sewed them into a blanket.
A few weeks later we had another baby shower. There were many gifts; but, the opening of the finished blanket with a card listing the names of all the knitters was the highlight of the event.
Baby Jessica arrived, March 7, 2006 healthy and happy. The blanket is one of her favorites. I hope she treasures it forever because it represents all the loving people who were eagerly awaiting her arrival.
