Nifty Nitters
Created By: Marilla Lowe

I have always been a knitter. At an afternoon tea hosted by a work colleague I met a lady coordinating 'Love Rugs'. She told me about how many people around Australia make rugs, or even just a few squares, and the completed rugs are forwarded to Sydney and kept in a warehouse ready to be taken to the next disaster, e.g. earthquake in Afghanistan, Iran, etc. They transported by airlines for free.

I provided half a dozen rugs to the Love Rugs then a lady I work with said 'Why don't we make rugs for our own local charity - the ABC Giving Tree'. It was mentioned casually to one of the radio presenters and we were inundated with offers of wool, people wanting to help, etc. The first year we managed to complete 65 rugs to hand to four or five charities, the second year we had 165 and last year we handed over 365.

The project has given so many people a purpose, e.g. ladies in retirement homes. We host a morning tea just before the charities collect the rugs and all the knitters are invited to see their handiwork. They provide inspiration to one another and the whole project has given a lot of people much joy to know that they are helping to make someone's life a little more comfortable on a cold winter's night.
