THE GIFT OF CROCHET
Created By: FRANK M DANIEL
During the early years of my time as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division as an infantryman, I was hospitalized for better part of two years. Because of an accident during one of my jumps that created injuries that was time consuming to heal. Occupational therapy was required to pass the time. I did leather crafts, assembling models and other crafts. They helped but they did not take much time to complete. So one of the nurses (Mrs. Johnson) taught me to crochet and the other nurses helped me with supplies and encouragement. At first I did not want to learn something that I considered a female skill. Of which I was in error and forever grateful forever ones efforts.
With their support I was able to crochet an afghan in about two weeks, because that was all I did between meals, medical valuations, and sleep. I would give them to anyone who needed or wanted one.
All this happen over 30 years ago. I still crochet today and this is one of the things that I am grateful to learned during my 20 years of service in the Army.
