my miracle crochet baby
Created By: Laura Roberts
At 27 years old I desperately wanted to have another baby. I had one child already that was 8 years old and was having a lot of difficulty carrying a second one to term, after several miscarriages my doctor suggested that I was under a lot of stress as he could not find anything wrong with me. I had quit smoking every time I got pregnant but with the disappointment of miscarriage after miscarriage I always started again and quitting certainly wasnt helping my stress level. One call to my all knowing grandma and I was set. She simply said "my dear, I gave you the tools when you were 6 to relieve stress, your crochet hooks, go and find them". I had no idea where I had put them but after a good search through the basement I found them. Covered in dust in a little box with painted flowers were my grandmothers hooks. Several sizes but 5 worked best. With that I went to the store and bought some beautiful baby wool. When I wanted a cigarette, I would crochet. When I felt stressed about work, I would crochet. By the time of my first ultrasound at 12 weeks she was already healthy and huge and had so many cute little sweaters that if she didnt come I could have clothed all the kids in the neighbourhood. No cigarettes, no stress and 100 sweaters later, my beautiful daughter sophia was born. But it didnt end there, I went on to make poncho sets with little hats and mittens for winter and spring dresses and booties. The baby is now almost two years old and all of the little items have been donated to the local womens shelter for the kids there, they barely got any wear there was so much of them and I still crochet constantly. It has slowed down some because I am back to work now but I have moved on to more complicated projects like stuffed animals and shawls for grandma's, mine and hers. She is still my miracle crochet baby and the doctor tells his patients all the time about the very young woman who crocheted her way to a healthy pregnancy. The best part was I hadnt crocheted a thing since I was 6 years. My oldest daughter is 10 now and is convinced that while all of her friends are into sports she will be a crochet girl for life.
