Knitting as a companion
Created By: Patti Fischetti
I was seven years old when I went to live with my mom and stepfather. At that time they owned a resturant and I was extremely lonely. Around the corner was a yarn shop run by a little old lady named Mrs. Orchard. She told my mom that she would teach me to knit in exchange for free meals. So I started learning. I made slippers and a baby hat. Needless to say everyone got slippers that Christmas.
As I got older I learned to crochet by my mon. We did lots of trim work during the summer. After that I quit doing either.
At 18 I wenat into the Air Force and I picked up knitting again. I knitted scarves and gave them as gifts to my frineds. After that I started knitting baby blankets then as my confidence grew I started knitting baby sweaters and finally adult sweaters. When my children started growing up I knit them sweaters and crocheted afgans for them.
During the winter, I crochet afgans and keep them to give as gifts.
As I grow older knitting and crochet have been my constant companions. Keeping me company always.
