MY HOBBY
Created By: Maybelline Rice

While confined to bed for "failed back syndrome, I got to thinking about family, friends.............This poem was born::

"MY HOBBY"

A hobby I learned in 1968

Made that summer less boring---gave me

something to create.

While sitting with my cousin who'd learned

as a wee girl on Little Cayman, I'd

watch the hook and thread fly--become

an item in her hand!

Patiently, she taught me single stitch, chain

stitch, double stitch--even popcorn

stitch, too----why there weren't ANY

crochet stitch Cousin Daisy couldn't do!

She'd use a tiny steel hook--a 7 or a 10--

something I couldn't master right then.

But we'd sit and we'd visit, three generations

of women, crocheting strands of thread,

learning from my Mother and Cousin

the REAL education that High School

didn't teach!

Both my Mother and Cousin have gone on before

but they left the memories of that summer

we spent---enjoying each other's ompany

and their teaching me more than what

we learned from books:

The Family History I learned and the strands

of thread that became passages of time

pulled together with our crochet hooks!
