My Grandma
Created By: Karin Whittaker
It has been one of the best gifts that my grandmother could have blessed me with prior to her passing away when I was five. She taught me the basics when I was about 4 years old and my other grandmother helped me remember how to knit when I was in grade school. I have been knitting for about 35 years. Even with two busy boys I find time in the evenings to do a little knitting.
They have started to request different things that they would like me to make them.
I have also made a lot of scarves and afghans over the years as gifts from the heart. I have started to make a sweater for my father (it was his mother who taught me how to knit). He begged her to make him a sweater, and it was her last sweater she made before she died. About 5 years later we had a house fire and lost everything including Dad’s sweater.
I will be going to a local yarn shop that has some classes that I would like to take so I can try and get the sweater to fit him. And pick up some tips and pointers as I make his sweater.
Knitting is one way that I relax and unwind in the evenings after work. After I have completed one project and my hands are still I feel like I should be doing something. I also take my projects with me to work and knit at lunch, or while I am waiting for an appointment, or if I am traveling I bring my project with me.
I can remember Grandma sitting knitting a sweater in her rocking chair. She would be knitting away, watching her game show never looking down to see where she was in her pattern. She was the same about crocheting.
