Last year as my ailing father slept, my mother would sit by him on the sofa and crochet - a hat, a scarf, potholders, anything to pass the time quietly and be by his side. One by one, she passed on her stitches to all three daughters - we stayed by Mom and Dad during those difficult months and found solace in the quiet work our hands produced. There were many days all four women would be found huddled together on the sofa working through a new stitch or pattern.
As we finished those first items, we found we could not part with them, baby blankets for the those first great-grandchildren Dad so hoped to have seen. To this day, every stitch is a blessing -and every item includes a prayer.
