Joyful Knitting
Created By: Barbara Esmond

I learned to knit as a little girl in England when I was 7 or 8 years old--my first project being a scarf for my teddy bear. As the years went by knitting was put aside to make room for other interests. When I began to have grandchildren it was great to discover that I could still knit and even follow a pattern. I also found that knitting made me happy and it was completely satisfying to make something that someone could actually use. My biggest love is making baby sweaters and can't begin to count how many I've made but probably about 50 in a year. After running out of family and friends to give these to, I discovered 2 organizations that love to receive hand made sweaters. First Resort is an organization that helps single young women who have become pregnant and decide to carry their babies to term. Many of these women keep their babies and this organization honors this choice and does all it can to support and help these women with physical needs and counseling. One practical way they help is to give these ladies a layette for their new baby and they love to receive hand made things to include with this gift. It lets the women know that someone cares about them and helps them feel special. Another source that needs hand knitted sweaters is the Guideposts Knitting Project. They collect hand knit sweaters (made from a pattern which they provide) and after collecting several thousand sweaters they ship them to impoverished children in various parts of the world who need a sweater to keep them warm. Both these organizations have web sites that provide more information about what they do.

I will always be thankful that I was taught how to knit and that I can do something useful with this ability. The variety of colors and textures of yarn these days make it even more fun--it really is a joyful experience!
