my mothers memories
Created By: Cynthia Stevens
When I was around 13 I wanted to learn to crochet. I had watched my mother crochet me a shawl and my sister a scarf, and so desperately wanted to learn. She taught me to crochet with my 2 fingers and said if I could learn as she had she would buy me the needle and yarn to make a scarf.
Well to my surprise I picked up on it very quickly, and my mother was as equally surprised. In the months to come she had become very ill and we later learned she had leukemia. I lost both my mom and my sister to this dreaded type of cancer.
I taught my sister to read patterns and learn new crochet techniques, she was so happy to learn as she never got the chance too before we lost our mother at such a young age, she was 35, I was 15 my sister 13.
Through the years, I have made several blankets for new mothers and friends as well as gifts. I still think about my mother and the love she shared with me and the time we had together as short as it was and she took that time to teach me a wonderful craft that I can in turn teach to others as well as give such wonderful gifts to treasure and pass down to their family.
