The Bessings of A Prayer Shawl
Created By: Georgia Barton

A lady in our church started a prayer shawl ministry about two years ago. She was asking for people who could knit or crochet. I taught myself to knit, so I told her that I would love to join her ministry. My first prayer shawl was a prayer lap robe for this elderly gentleman in our church. I finished it and gave to the pastor to bless and give it to the man. Oh boy, my heart was filled with love the next Sunday. He came up to me and give me a big hug and he thanked me over and over again. He loved it, and it was his favorite color too.
After six months of knitting the woman that started this ministry got sick and couldn't do it anymore, so she asked me if I would take it over. I prayed over it and decided that I would take it on. I had never done anything like this before. So I asked for more ladies who knew how to knit or crochet. I got a couple more ladies and we started making prayer shawls. I went out and bought a book entitled Prayer Shawls by Lion Brand Yarn. Boy was it ever a help. I recommend it if any body is thinking about starting a Prayer Shawl Ministry.
It gives you some easy patterns,it gives you the meanings of the different colors, and it also gives you some ideas of some prayers that you can say while knitting. We have given out 89 prayer shawls and 4 prayer lap robes. One story sticks out in my mind. I give this prayer shawl to this woman, and her husband took it and wore it all the time. He was just coming off chemo treatment. Well the fist week that he had it, he gained 7 lbs.The second week that he had it him and his wife went out of town for the weekend (the first time that he had been out of the house in months.)Then the third week he went back to work. He says it all happened because of the prayer shawl. Boy, the power of the prayer shawls is unbelievable. It has given me such a great blessing. Georgia Barton
