My Companion

I learned to crochet when I was a teenager. I was given a size 14 steel hook and I made the shell pattern with thread on the edge of a handkerchief. Even today I prefer to use the finer threads. I also was taught to knit at a young age.

As I grew older I developed Essential Tremors in my hands and every day tasks were becoming more difficult. I put away the hooks, needles and yarns for a long time.

Today I live mostly alone in my son's condo. My husband and I turned over the house we lived in for over 30 years to our son so he could raise his boys in the house he grew up in. His first born son has Down Syndrome, and it was important for them to live there for his sake. Meanwhile my husband decided to move in with his elderly mother to take care of her. There was no room there for me, so I have been staying alone in the condo.

One morning I decided that I was no longer going to let my tremors control my life. I went and got a job teaching crochet at a local craft store. I didn't know if I could do it, but God was good. I had to figure out a way to hold my hooks but I managed. I even started knitting again which still is difficult but not impossible.

I later started volunteering to teach women to crochet for Warm Up America. All the projects I do are such great therapy for me in filling up the hours and days I'm alone.
