Where to begin! I have a good friend who can...
Created By: Karen Snyder
Where to begin! I have a good friend who can crochet and I used to watch her for hrs fascinated. At one time I even tried to learn how to do it, but I always had problems with the tension so I gave it up. I have been doing crafts of some sort since I was in high school, and eventually I taught myself how to cross stitch which is something I love to do but every once in awhile I like a new challenge.
A number of years ago I was serving in the Service when I got sick on deployment and was sent home early and later discharged. I came to find out I had become diagnosed with anxiety disorder. That affected me because I really loved being in the Service, and at about the same time, my dad had to have 5 by-pass open heart surgery. With everything going on my anxiety level was out of control and I needed something to focus on that was good so I taught myself how to knit.
It has taken off from there. Now I knit because it has not only become a great love of mine and something that I enjoy, but it is my "therapy." When I am knitting I can go to a different place so to speak, a place where I can think and focus. It is a calming place. I will make something for someone specific or I will just do a project and when finished put it up until a time comes that I have someone to give it to.
I guess you could say that it in some ways saved me from my self and brought me out of my depression and helped me to beat it, and to this day, it helps me control my anxiety to the point I no longer have to take medication. And to me that is true freedom. If you want to do something good, teach someone a craft, whether it be knitting, crochet, or any other craft. You may save them in ways you may never know!!
