A New Step-Mother's Gift
Created By: Debra Jarvie-Sexton
When I was seven years old, I lost my younger sister tragically to an accident. Shortly after my parents marriage ended and I felt very alone. I would visit my Father's "new" family and not feel I fit in very well on the weekends having been with my mother all week, just the two of us. My new step-mother,Joyce crocheted and knitted beautifully and I would watch her, envious of her ease at which she made such lovely things. My mother was never crafty but my grandmother knitted and crocheted as well, and I always wished to learn.
One day Joyce (my step-mother) gave me a ball of gray Lion Brand yarn and showed me how to chain. I would sit and create yards of chain until it was consistent and until she showed me single crotchet, then double, triple and so on. Eventually she showed me how to knit which I must say I'm yet to get the hang of, but I crochet like the wind! I can make an afghan in 24 hours! I have been bed-bound many times in my life as I am handicapped, and crocheting has always given me a sense of accomplishment even when my pain-filled body isn't capable of much else. I never became very close with Joyce but feel her gift to me was a sign she loved me and though she's gone now, I cherish her through my own pieces that I lovingly make for others as gifts of our love.
