free-time waiting for my mom
Created By: Lynn DesJardins
When my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer in January, 2006, I knew I would be with her for treatments and have a lot of time. I started to knit after years of not knitting. The projects were always simple: slippers, hats, scarves, mittens. It seems those of us that knitted were always together in one area and became known as "knitting corner." At times we would chit-chat and other times we would just sit there in silence and knit. Although it was a difficult time, this knitting group and projects became a solace. Some of the people waiting for the patients and employees saw us and smiled at us with encouragement to knit. The head nurse asked us to knit one project to sell at the clinic tag sale for the cancer patients who could not afford basic toiletries. We all agreed (5 of us). Although my mom passed away in March, 2007, it helps to continue to knit little projects.
