An Angry Teenager and I Learned to Knit
Created By: Rhonda Kueck
We moved to Huntington the summer after my youngest child's sophomore year in high school. She was angry and sure we had ruined her life. I had listened to all her griping I could stand. I told her she had griped at me all she was going to and that I was going grocery shopping. To my dismay she followed me to the car and continued her rant.
She had gotten tired of the usual:
She would never have another boyfriend
She would never have another friend
She would die alone with no one to care
She hated the ______________. (insert anything, she hated it all)
She began really reaching for things to gripe about:
I had been 30 minutes late picking her up in 4th grade (I had been in a wreck)
She always got the ugliest room
Why hadn't we ever gotten her a horse (maybe we lived in the city)
Why had I let her sister pick on her so much when they were young
Then she hit me with one that made me smile.
Why hadn't I ever taught her to knit (I did not knit)
As we drove to the grocery store I saw Knit and Hook. I did a U turn and parked directly in front of the store. She got really upset that I was getting out of the car. I told her I was going to inquire about knitting lessons. She protested loudly saying, "I was just running out of things to gripe about, I don't want to knit." I continued into the store with a hysterical teenager in tow.
They were starting a new knitting class that very evening. We started and have never stopped knitting. That six week class got my daughter and I through the summer without killing each other.
By the time the class was finished school had started and she was happier. Thank goodness for knitting.
