Celebrate Your Uniqueness
Created By: Janice Ogata

I am a rarity in my family, I am the only left-handed person. It's interesting I am left-handed but I crochet & knit right-handed. All my life I've been singled out because I'm left-handed. Being left-handed was always seen as a negative. I was always made to feel different by teachers and even members of my own family.

I feel in some ways being left-handed means I think differently then most people. The thing that frustrates me is I can't seem to grasp the idea of reading a pattern. I can make things if people actually show me how to do it, or if I just start making something without a pattern.

I went to my local yarn shop to try to learn more and met a group of women who belong to a knitting guild. I have been a member for the past 4 years. I am proud to say I am a "Jewel City Knitter." I have formed great friendships and taken part in "Knit in the City" and "Race for the Cure." They are amazed at the things I come up with without a pattern. I think I impress them as much as they impress me!

So my message to you dear readers is celebrate your uniqueness!!! There is no right or wrong with the creative process. Go ahead and dive in with your favorite ball of yarn and just start knitting and crocheting. You will feel so good about yourself when your friends and family appreciate the scarf, poncho, hat, legwarmers or afghan you've made especially for them! Don't throw in the towel because you can't read a conventional pattern. Knitting and Crocheting is all about being creative. Create and enjoy!!! Celebrate your uniqueness you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish!
