Crocheting with Prayer
Created By: Connie Hildebrand
I learned to crochet several years ago. I made a large blanket for my first granddaughter's double bed. I was quite an experience. But making prayer shawls is wonderful. A group of ladies in our parish in St. Hedwig, started a prayer shawl ministry. We made shawls and lap blankets for the sick and elderly in our parish. It was exciting to see the faces of the people we made and delivered these shawls too.
Recently I mentioned that we need to expand. We started making white baby bibs to give to the infants that were being baptized. The first group of 3 bibs were given out the last Sunday in May. Our pastor was very pleased to bless these bibs, and the parents of these infants were excited to receive a remembrance of their child's baptism. Again, to see the smiles on these parents faces made not only my day complete but our group as well when I reported back to them how excited everyone was to receive these small tokens.
Inside our shawls, lap blankets and bibs is a label that says "These items are made with prayer by the Divine Mercy Cenicle and Prayer Shawl Ministry, St. Hedwig Texas". The yarn that was used was Homespun in all colors and the money to purchase this yarn was a gift from several other ministries in our parish. Some of us individuals also purchased yarn so that these items could be complete. We use baby yarn to made the bibs.
When I started with this ministry, two of my three daughters had decided not come home to see us as there was some misunderstandings. But with crocheting and prayer, one of the daughters has come back home with her spouse and their son, our grandson. I will continue to make bibs and shawls and pray that our other daughter will come home again with her spouse and their three children whom we have never met.
Crocheting has made a difference in my life. Even my husband will shop for yarn.
