Not Just a Learning Experience
Created By: Jan Schoeppler
I came into this world on June 25, 1937, shortly before WWII began. My two uncles served in the USAF.
My mother and my aunts were busy knitting sweaters for the Red Cross, but the only why I could help was to hold the yarn so they could roll it in to balls. I was about 7 and very unhappy. My mother finally tried to teach me to knit. Much to her surprise, I was a quick study. While they knitted the backs and fronts of the sweaters.I knitted the sleeves. I was so proud. I just loved to knit.
Years later my three sons came home from the hospital in hats, sweaters and booties that I knitted them.
We moved from Long Island to the Foothills of North Carolina 12 years ago. All of the ladies here crochet beautifully, but know little or nothing about knitting.
When I started making things for new babies, and wearing things I had knitted for myself, many of them became interested.
About five years ago I started teaching a beginning knitting class at the local senior center. I'm proud to say that many of my ladies have become excellent knitters, and I've made many new friends.
I'm going to celebrate my 70th birthday soon and when I look at my life, it's easy to see that without knitting my life would not have been nearly as full. I give thanks to my mother and my aunts.
