Getting Away from My Pain
Created By: LINDA DUM
In the fall of 2005 I was facing the second of 3 surgeries on my right foot and another 5 months in a wheelchair non-weightbearing. I needed to find something that would get me thinking about someone besides myself and feeling sorry for me. A friend had given me a knit pattern for toe warmers, but you can only use so many of those. Then she told me about an ecumenical ministry that was making prayer shawls and I thought I could do that.
So for the next year I made prayer shawls and using the prayer ministry in our church I started giving them away to those in need. I then started giving them to the homebound of our parish.
By the end of the year I new that the need was bigger than I could ever fulfill on my own. I spoke with our pastor about starting a ministry and he was excited as he had seen how much the prayer shawl I made for his mother had meant to her before she died. At our fall ministry fair we did sign-ups and we had 25 people express an interest. Eight months later group has 18 active ladies, some who learned to knit and crochet to be part of this ministry. We have now made 65 prayer shawls and given them away to people in our parish, homebound and friends of parishioners. We have given the Stephen Ministers prayer shawls to give to the people they work with as well.
This ministry has a life of its own and I know that it is driven by a power more wonderful than I could ever dream of being. I have met some wonderful ladies that I probably wouldn't have ever met and I look forward to our monthly meetings to see what color and patterns they have used this time. The Homespun yarn is so soft and has so many colors to change from and best of all it is machine washable and dryable and looks as good as new again. Many people comment on the warm feeling they get when they put the prayer shawls on. Thank you Lion Brand for supporting this wonderful ministry.
