I have been a knitter for 40+ years. A week...
Created By: Kathleen Horning

I have been a knitter for 40+ years. A week after the 911 attack on NYC my son was sent to Afghanistan with Army Special Forces. We had no idea where he was and no contact with him until Thanksgiving time. I was a TV News junky looking for anything I could on his unit. Having yarn and needles in my hands kept me positive and helped with my nervous energy. The troops were not allowed to receive anything religious for Christmas and it immediately got me thinking of sending them homemade USA stockings filled with home town items. I knit red/white and blue ones and also camo stockings with olive green trees in the middle. People donated items to fill them and my mother personally paid for all the postage to send over 50 stockings to an entire unit. These had to go in unmarked boxes to a base here in the USA and they forwarded them on through the Red Cross. My son and his Sgt got the first two and I sent a note saying many more would be coming for all. We were confined to small shoe size boxes so it took 25 packages to get them all there. As the next boxes arrived my son begn throwing them to guys unopened knowing there were two in a box and he said some of the guys got tears in their eyes to think I had hand knit all 50 of them their own stocking. I personalized them if I had names and many I put USA or GO ARMY ..... It was a wonderful feeling to know they appreciated them. They were sleeping on cots in air conditioned tents and did not even have a seat to sit on...they hung them from the foot of their cots or on their footlockers. Kids from the area schools wrote Christmas cards to include and it created many smiles for the soldiers.

I have photos of the stockings if you like.
