Awesome Knitsters
Created By: Mary Anne Getchell
As a second grade elementary teacher, and one who has been knitting since second grade, I introduce knitting to seven year olds after our classwork is done. There are usually five students each year who really get hooked and it's so rewarding to see. By third grade, one or two students will continue to knit.
In the school year 2006-07, 31 of 34 second graders are knitting or crocheting or both! It is the most wonderful surprise and awesome gift that an avid knitter could receive! They have knit scarves for grandmothers, Easter chicks for themselves and others, and adorable hats! It is thrilling to watch such young people so enamored in their work!
One little student even told parents that the homework sheet was missing, the spelling words for the week were unknown, and the day was just too busy. When asked what made the day so busy, the child replied, "I'm knitting!"
No, I am NOT a creative writer. I'm too busy knitting! Sincerely, Mary Anne Getchell
PS I have wonderful pictures of the little knitters, just don't know if it's acceptable to attach them. There are no names of the students to violate any confidentiality concerns.
