Barn Knitter

I am a barn knitter. I didn't start out that way, it just happened. Like every other new knitter, I planned to make beautiful sweaters, afghans, and other gifts for family members. Then my family gave me a horse, a pregnant horse at that, her name was 'Blackie' and she changed my life and the way I create.
Mares prefer to give birth in a private secluded place; I made an area in the barn where I could monitor her from a distance but be near enough to help when her time came. When I assembled the birthing kit for her I made up a sock kit for me.
Showing no signs of eminent birth, Blackie delivered 22 days early a weak and shaky foal. From my perch in the barn to a shady spot under the trees, I knitted those socks and watched Blackie care for her foal. The foal, 'Tess' grew strong and I kept knitting socks. I stopped planning sweaters and started planning socks.
That was four years ago, my 'barn knitting' techniques and tools have evolved and adapted.
I knit socks and friends send me wool sock yarns. On cold, wet days after riding, one of my friends asked for "those warm, hand-knit socks" to wear to warm up their feet. I taught her to knit and last Christmas she gave me two beautiful shawls.
It's time to visit my stash of yarn and assemble another sock kit, Phoebe, a recently adopted horse, is expected to foal within the next four weeks. I still have Blackie, Tess and her 21-month old brother Jack.
