Knitting at 54
Created By: Susan Carruth
I helped begin a Prayer Shawl Ministry at my church a year ago. I knew this was something I wanted to do, but didn't know how to knit. 15 of us met on Feb. 25, 2006 and began our ministry. One of the ladies there taught me how to knit and purl. As I began my shawl, I became frustrated with counting K3, P3, and would forget to change my yarn. I finally gave up on the P3 and just knitted. I found myself flying along, praying for people I knew, people I didn't know, and whatever came into my mind. The Sunday after Easter our group had 22 shawls to bless in our Sunday Services-we had hopped for 5!
Since then our ministry has just blossomed. We have old and young alike knitting and crocheting in our groups. We meet twice a month on Monday afternoons and evenings and once a month on Sunday afternoon.
I have been blessed with so many stories of people who are hurting, who just need something to let them know that they are loved. A shawl is the perfect thing. It is hard for me to express in words what this has done for my life, but it has become my passion. In my mind, there is nothing better than to be working with my hands on something that will bring comfort to someone.
To date, we have given away close to 150 shawls to people all over the United States-that's a lot of love and compassion. But the biggest blessing is the peace knitting gives to me.
Thank you.
