After heart surgery
Created By: Barbara Vander Meer
In July, 2006, I went to Mayo Clinic for a check up. Eight weeks later, following a three valve replacement in my heart, I was finally dismissed. I had no strength in my unused muscles, but as I recovered, I needed something to make my hands and arms stronger and also give me something worthwhile to do. I could hardly wait to get back to my knitting. My mother taught me how to knit when I was young and I had always enjoyed the relaxation I felt. Now, several afghans later-one for each of my new grandchildren and a few extras, and slippers for Christmas for everyone, I schedule my time so that I have at least an hour during the day to knit. I also knit when I watch television in the evening. I guess I like to multi-task.
I also helped my mother get back into knitting. She had quit when arthritis stiffened her hands. I convinced her that exercise was good. I returned all the yarns, patterns, needles, etc. that she had given me. Now, at 84, she knits baby afghans just to keep on hand. Whenever her friends or neighbors have babies, gandbabies or even great grandbabies, Mom has them stop over to choose an afghan.
