My Mom is the Most Amazing Woman
Created By: Jo Ann Stewart
This story is about my mom. I am a Registered Nurse and was working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Many times, the most humane placement for an IV in those tiny babies is in their scalp. Placement is easier and quicker, and it usually lasts longer than other placements in the body. The problem came because we encourage parents to hold the babies close to them, outside of the isolette, but babies became cold very quickly because we could not place hats on their heads when there was an IV present.
I explained this problem to my mom because she is an amazing, creative, loving woman and I knew she would create a solution for us. Not more that a few days later, she presented me with a bag of tiny hats, made with the very softest Lion Brand yarn. These hats were made with a seam from the top to the rim and had a velcro closure so it could be placed on the infant's head around the IV and secured with velcro so the IV was not only undisturbed, but still visible to the nurse to make sure it was still functioning well! To go a step further, because she is so loving, she made these hats BEAUTIFUL. She made them with the most beautiful colors of yarn that were so soft, and placed the tiniest decorative buttons on the top of them to bring some "baby normalcy" to the parents of these premature babies who often, for months, only see hospital blankets and plain white t-shirts on their infants.
My mom knitted everywhere she went, the movies, car, at home, in order to provide a hat for as many babies as wanted them. We were able to have parents choose from a large supply of colors and yarns that they would like to have for their baby that would protect them from the cold while they snuggled.
She didn't stop there either. The sad reality is that some of these babies don't survive. My mom began making burial gowns for these babies that were beautifully knitted and adorned with long, streaming ribbons and beautiful buttons or tiny bows. Many women like to knit hats for babies, but it takes someone special to be able to knit a burial gown for a baby. Something to be treasured by a parent in a time of certain grief. My mom made them works of art for the parents.
I'm so proud of my mom. She's an amazing woman and doesn't keep her talents for herself!
