How Crocheting Changed My Life
Created By: Ferguson Claudette
I had been a full-time working mother for many years. After having a bad accident, which left me disabled and unable to work anymore, I started to feel useless and worthless.
An elderly lady that was my neighbor began coming to visit me on a regular basis and she always had her thread crochet with her.
I had learned how to do double crochet when I was just a teenager, but hadn't picked up a crochet hook for nearly 19 years. I felt there was no way that I could ever master the craft that she had made into an absolutely beautiful art.
She convinced me that it was "like riding a bike," once you learn how, you never really forget.
With much encouragement from her, I began to try my hand at it again and, to my surprise, it DID come back to me.
I had never been aware of so many different stitches and techniques! I began to teaach myself how to read patterns and I started crocheting everything I possibly could. I would try even the hardest of patterns to prove to myself that, indeed, I was still worth something and could still be productive.
I now am quite well known in my area for my "beautiful and intricate crochet work." I have even gone so far as to create some of my own patterns.
I've also been privilidged to teach the art to others, as young as 12 years old, and they love it, too.
My elderly friend has now passed on but, I know that she is smiling down on me as I continue what she so lovingly encouraged me to do.
Yes, crochet has definitely changed my life. And, I'll always be thankful for the art that two wonderful women taught to me.
(I have an online photo album of my work at this address: http://new.photos.yahoo.com/curlyraye2/album/576460762318088166)
Thank you for letting me share my story.
