Screaming into the Sunset
Created By: Deborah Higginbotham
A little over a year ago, my husband suddenly went on permanent disability due to illness. I was forced to leave my much-loved job at a large bank in order to care for him. After working for 38 years, my world was suddenly reduced to the inside of our apartment and caring for a seriously ill husband. It would be an understatement to say I was scared, lonely and depressed.
During one of my husband’s hospital stays, I purchased a book at the hospital gift shop about three women who were learning to knit. A couple of weeks later I was taking a walk near the hospital and I passed a yarn shop. Because of the book I went in “just to take a peek.” Oh my goodness! It was love at first sight. All the colors! All the textures! I wanted to touch everything. I wanted to grab handfuls of yarn and press them to my face. I immediately signed up for the beginning knitting class and haven’t stopped knitting since.
I’m still a novice, but I have found the perfect niche for myself in making scarves and felted pet blankets for charities. The projects are easy, portable, and give me something enjoyable to fill the hours at doctor’s offices and during hospital stays. I find the repetitive movement very relaxing and it is so satisfying to see a project grow.
I truly do not know how I would be able to cope with my husband’s illness and my isolation from work and friends without knitting. Knitting for charities has given me a purpose and interest beyond my husband’s illness. It gives me something to look forward to each day, keeps my hands busy, and helps me maintain my sanity during the alternately scary and boring periods that make up my days. Without knitting, I think I would have run screaming into the sunset long ago.
