Women's knitting ministry touches lives
Created By: Neva Hall
This is a new note I sent the the Women of New Joy Lutheran Church in Westfield. It tells the story:
When I first started talking to Pastor Connie and Amy about the women's ministry a couple of years ago, I told them I would like to start a group that knitted. I described it as a "stitch and bitch". Connie begged me to change the name but they got the idea of women getting together in fellowship with a common goal of giving back to the community. I initially saw it as a way to reach out to the community and make those less fortunate feel warmed by God's love.
Then, Amy Gibbons mentioned that she had heard about a prayer shawl ministry. We loved the idea. Again, not really envisioning that we would be as personally touched by the work as we were today. While we were in the planning stages we rarely considered all the details it takes to make something work. We thought it was a good idea and relied on faith and on others for the implementation and execution. So now, we as a group of Joysters meet on Mondays and we learn from and about each other. We form friendships and bonds that are beyond description. None of which we really expected or considered in the planning stages. We thank God for the grace He has shown through this group.
I think we got to see first hand today that what we do touches lives. I'm so humbled that all of you were there to witness the actual hands on prayer that happens for each shawl and the fact that we were able to give back to one of our own, Jane Gegel and her family, was so moving and reassuring. The fact that the Gegles know we love them and will be reminded that they have a prayer filled hug anytime they want to pick it up has to be powerful.
We have given 5 prayer shawls out this month. One for Flo and four for the Gegel family. It reminds us the importance of meeting and knitting so that we can always have a supply of prayer filled hugs for those who need it. Thank you all for your contributions. You have touched lives.
Our women's ministry knits scarves for the homeless, chemo hats for Riley's children's hospital, and prayer shawls for anybody who needs a prayer filled hug.... We meet on Monday nights at my house and we are always amazed how touched people who receive our gifts are by the effort.
